Bielefelders

Bielefelders

More and more people are keeping Bielefelders in their flocks. We can see why they are so popular! Bielefelders are beautiful with their chestnut red, cream, black and gold barred feathers. As far as personality goes, they are my favorite - true gentle giants. In addition to looks and personality, they are consistent layers of very large brown eggs. There is something pure and lovely about collecting a basket of soft brown eggs.

We must not forget one of the coolest things about this breed! Bielefelders are autosexing! That means that we can identify male from female chicks at hatch just by what they look like, and this trait will be passed on to purebred offspring. The males will hatch lighter colored with a yellow/white dot on their head and females will hatch a bit darker with chipmunk stripes. Can you identify the 2 male chicks from the female chick in the third picture below? They are very easy to differentiate at hatch!

Bielefelders are German bred birds. They come in the silver or crele variety. Our flock is the crele feather pattern - although we would love to raise a silver flock as well! (Chicken math!) When breeding our Bielefelders, we focus on that large egg size and the chestnut red feathers on the hens plumage. With their striking appearance, high egg production, and gentle nature, these birds are a favorite among our flocks!
